You need some serious Monday motivation, not from a celeb, but from someone who trains them. Meet Namrata Purohit, she’s an award-winning fitness instructor who, at 16, became the youngest Stott pilates instructor in the world. Her Mumbai-based venture, The Pilates And Altitude Training Studio, is one of the first fitness studios to offer pilates and Simulated Altitude Training under one roof. Here, we look at her journey.

 

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE FITNESS AS YOUR CAREER AND THAT TOO AT SUCH AN EARLY AGE?

You know, since I was young, I’ve always been active. I loved sports, all sorts. I am a national-level squash player, played football for Mumbai. One day I fell off a horse and had to undergo knee surgery, after which I was asked to take it easy. I was told I couldn’t play, dance… couldn’t do what I loved. My father, who’s also a fitness expert advised giving pilates a try. I started understanding fitness better and we did a pilates squat together. He had a back issue for 30 years and that was gone in just four sessions!

 

WHY WOULD YOU TELL PEOPLE TO CHOOSE PILATES OVER ANYTHING ELSE?

I think pilates is one form of exercise which works for each and every body part and the mind as well. It will help you improve your concentration, mind and even tone up your body in the way nothing else can do, as it works on your body much deeper and not just superficially on your muscles. It also helps prevent injury. For people in sports, it's helpful to better movement, flexibility, and balance. It is so customised that it works for everyone.

 

HOW HAS THE JOURNEY BEEN SO FAR? AND IF YOU WERE TO TALK ABOUT HIGHS AND LOWS OF BEING IN THIS CAREER, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

I think it has been a really amazing journey. The fact that I get to meet a different kind of people is what makes it outstanding, as it teaches you a lot. I think as a person it helped me grow. I don’t see any low because I think even if there has been something which may have put me down for a bit, it is something that made me want to do more. So, I don’t think there has been a low, it has been pretty much a high. We meet such amazing clients, I get to be with my dad, my mom, who helps me with the back-end stuff, so it’s the best phase to be in. And also, you are helping people make their bodies better; I feel like it’s a gift because you see people love themselves so much more once they start working out. Not only about how they look, but how happy they get when they complete ten push-ups.

 

WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE FOR WOMENS DAY (MARCH 8TH)?

My message would be – just don’t think! Do what you enjoy and make sure you always love your body. Don’t let people put you down, because your body is your body, and you need to treat your body as your temple. It is what it is, give it what it needs. It's important that you just love it because it is going to be with you all your life. I always say – it’s the only place you have to live in all your life. Work out, eat healthy and eat well so you can live a happier life.
