It seems like everyone and their dogs are style bloggers nowadays, but don’t let that deter you; the magical thing about social media/the internet is that there’s room for everyone. If you love fashion, think you’ve got styling skills to rival the best in the biz, then follow these top tips on how to start your own personal blog…
HAVE A POINT OF VIEW
This is the most important point. If you want to run a successful fashion blog, then you need to do something different. Whether that’s having a quirky aesthetic, stand out Instagram theme or a tone of voice that branches away from the mainstream- it’s important to be authentic, and stay in your own lane. Take inspiration from your favourite bloggers, for sure, but being a carbon copy of another blogger won’t get you noticed.
Even if it’s something small, like always wearing a pocket square, you need a brand that sets you apart. Men’s style blogging isn’t as saturated as women’s so you’ve already got a head start in that department!
GET THE AESTHETIC
Whether you use a platform like Blogger or WordPress, or have a custom-built site, it’s important that there’s a synonymous aesthetic throughout everything you do. There’s thousands of great templates on WordPress, or via companies like Pipdig, that can create a sleek finish without a hefty price tag.
Instagram themes are easy on the eye. From minimalistic, to industrial and colour-gradients, pick a theme and stick with it. Downloading photo editing tools like Afterlight or VSCOcam will help- use the same filter on every image to keep the flow going as you scroll.
BUILD A FOLLOWING
There has been a big scandal lately with bloggers buying followings, so trust us, don’t do it. Bot followers won’t provide organic engagement, they are easy to spot and they’ll give you a bad name in the bloggersphere. The biggest and most respected bloggers out there have grown followings through creating engaging content, posting high quality images, stepping outside of the box, utilising social media effectively (tagging never hurts) and by being honest. If you only want to create a style blog to get a social media following and perks, you’ll fail- if there’s no passion, there’s no success.
Once you have a respectable following, start reaching out to PRs/brands/other bloggers. Collaborating with similar bloggers, attending press days to network, and creating content with brands will all get your name out there and help you establish a blog.
INFLUENCER VS BLOGGER
Know the difference. Neither is better or worse than the other, but they shouldn’t be confused. If content isn’t of any interest to you, then consider building a purely visual brand on Instagram, and become an influencer. If writing is your jam, then a blog will serve well.
