Drive From: Chennai

Distance: 37 kilometres

Estimated Time: 1 hour

Dotted along the East Coast Road—or ECR as it’s commonly known—are beachside resorts that offer calming views of the Bay of Bengal, quiet environs and, of course, succulent seafood. Built on the ramparts of a ruined 18th century Dutch castle is the Vivanta By Taj — Fisherman’s Cove, which houses Bay View. Enjoy food that is as fresh as the morning or afternoon catch, depending on what time of the day you are there, prepared using local coastal flavours. And if it’s a romantic night for you, don’t forget to reserve the watch-tower table.

Drive From: Mumbai

Distance: 92 kilometres

Estimated Time: 2.5 hours

On the waterfront at Alibaug’s Mandwa Jetty is the refreshingly new café Boardwalk, run by South Mumbai’s popular restaurant Flamboyanté. Open for breakfast, lunch and sundowners, this Greek-inspired café, with its Mediterranean theme and splashes of maritime décor, is a relaxing change from the fast pace of city life. Lounge by the sea in the outdoor space that mimics a beach café, or head indoors when the sun gets too harsh to handle. Burgers, wood-fired pizzas, cocktails, fish and chips, and a few Mediterranean dishes feature on the menu. Throw in a 20-minute speedboat ride from Mumbai and back—if you want to skip the drive—and you have your weekend sorted.

Drive From: New Delhi

Distance: 107 kilometres

Estimated Time: 2.5 hours

Few people in the hunt for Japanese restaurants in New Delhi know that the most authentic ones are actually in Neemrana, Rajasthan, a couple of hours beyond city limits. Known as a boutique weekend getaway, this historical town boasts a dedicated Japanese industrial hub, and is home to production units of some of the East Asian country’s most popular corporates. Full-fledged Japanese department stores, restaurants and hotels are commonplace here, with ingredients flown in everyday from the land of the rising sun. The menu at Ramada Hotel’s Daikichi lists raw tuna, and tofu with leek soya sauce, alongside breaded prawn, stir-fried pork with kimuchi, and miso ramen.
