When the Jaguar XE launches—bookings for the car have opened—it will slot right into the entry-level luxury sedan segment that the British brand is currently missing. With its lightweight aluminium construction, the XE is expected to set a new standard for ride and handling. While internationally it is available with a diesel and petrol engine, for now, the brand is only looking at bringing in two petrol trims to India. The combination of the familiar Jaguar design, and posh interiors, will make the XE a stiff competitor for cars like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Here’s another compact SUV that will be seen on Indian roads this year. German carmaker Volkswagen’s Tiguan is already a stiff competitor for the likes of the Skoda Yeti, abroad. Built around the brand’s popular hatchback, Golf, the Tiguan is one of the smoothest and comfiest rides in this segment. With all-wheel-drive options, a sturdy engine, and familiar well-designed Volkswagen interiors, this crossover is tough, dependable and plush. We expect it might be a tad bit pricier than its Japanese rivals but will lend some variety to a segment that’s hot at the moment.

Pitted against highly revered names like the Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, the Honda BR-V is the newest entrant to the compact-SUV brigade. Built larger than the others, and the only seven-seater in the segment, this one could be appealing if you want more room without opting for one of the bigger, bulkier SUVs. With elements borrowed from Honda’s City and Jazz models, the interior has a premium air. And for those looking at making it their city ride, the peppy 1.5-litre petrol version with a CVT gearbox is just what you need.

The Jeep brand is coming soon to India, and the now live Indian website features the executive SUV Grand Cherokee. Until a decade ago, most sturdy, rugged SUVs capable of off-roading were colloquially known as ‘jeep’ in India. So, the brand already as reasonable recognition for making vehicles that can be driven through mountainous terrains of the Himalayas. The Grand Cherokee is just that, but spruced up to also give you high levels of comfort. Premium leather-trimmed seats, exotic open-pore wood accents, a sunroof, and Harman Kardon audio system will make your next drive to Rohtang Pass feel smoother than never before.

Swedish marque Volvo is known to make cars that rank high on safety, while also offering luxury comfort and features. The brand’s soon to be launched S90 aims to be a true driver’s car, blending design and driving experience. The key lies in its safety features. The S90 detects pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals on the road, and can brake if the driver does not. Volvo’s Pilot Assist technology has the ability to automatically maintain a set speed or distance to the car ahead of you. And in a world first, the steer assist technology puts you back on safer path if you stray off road markings at the edge.
