LA LA LAND

The romantic musical that everyone’s talking about. Not just because it stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in it, but also because it builds Los Angeles as a dream set-like city and transports viewers to, as the name suggests, La La Land. The movie’s received 14 nominations at the Academy Awards!

 

 

Throwback to his best performances:

 

HALF NELSON

In this 2006 American drama, Gosling plays Dan Dunne, the young middle-school history teacher with a drug addiction. When one of his 13-year-old students learn about his secret, he forms an unusual friendship with her.

 

BLUE VALENTINE

The 2010 emotionally gripping romantic drama of a couple, shifting back and forth in time between their courtship and the dissolution of their marriage. As Dean Periera, Gosling was nominated for best actor in a motion picture at the Golden Globes.

 

THE IDES OF MARCH

Starring with George Clooney, Gosling plays the role of the Stephen Meyers, the junior campaign manager in the US presidential candidate Mike Morris’ camp. An adaptation of Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North, the movie is a crash course in dirty politics.

HACKSAW RIDGE

It’s his first nomination for the Academy Awards. The British American actor plays WWII American Army Medic Desmond T Doss, who refused to kill at the battle of Okinawa and become the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.

SILENCE

Directed by Martin Scorsese, Silence is an adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 novel by the same name. Scorsese developed the movie over the last 25 years and the plot follows two 17th-century Jesuit priests who travel from Portugal to Japan to locate their missing mentor and spread Catholic Christianity.

 

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Garfield is now almost synonymous with Peter Parker, having played the role of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel.

 

THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Better known as the Facebook story, The Social Network is the real-life inspired story of Mark Zuckerberg and his road to launching the now superbly popular social networking website. Of course, he had much help from his friend Eduardo Saverin, played by Garfield.

LION

Also nominated for Best Picture, Lion is the story of the 30-year-old Saroo Brierley (Patel), who, armed with memories, determination and Google Earth, ventures in search of his biological parents. Twenty-five years ago Brierley lost his parents in Kolkata.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

As the young Jamal Malik, Patel showed enough acting prowess to be nominated for best actor at BAFTA and for supporting role at the Screen Actor Guild awards. This was also his debut film.

 

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

With a stellar star cast consisting of Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Lillete Dubey, Patel plays Sonny Kapoor, the always-available manager of the rundown Indian hotel. Boyish charm coupled with youthful energy did it for him. 

 

THE NEWSROOM

One of the two TV series that Patel has starred in. In this HBO production, he plays Neel Sampat, the television reporter and writer who covers the London Underground bombings with a camera phone. Sampat is influential in getting the team of News Night make better use of electronic media
